The Director-General launched the work during the Environmental and Social Impact Report Restitution Workshop on Tuesday 22 January 2018 at the Catholic Mission of Nsimalen.

Within the framework of conforming airports in Cameroon to standards of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and respond to the ICAO’s 2015 Audit during which the Nsimalen International Airport was classified as being of high risk due to the crossing of the runway by local residents. The Government of the Republic of Cameroon received a loan of 30 billion F CFA from the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (BIRD) to finance the air component of the Transport Sector Development Project (TSDP).

With the said loan, the state of Cameroon through the Cameroon Civil Aviation Authority- implementation Agency of the Areal Part of the TSDP, will use part of these funds to finance the works and acquire equipment in four (4) international airports in Cameroon.

Works on the Yaoundé Nsimalen International Airport perimeter road and other works such as the construction and rehabilitation of safety and security fences at the airports of Douala and Yaoundé-Nsimalen, a study to identify socio-economic infrastructure needs of local residents around the four airports will also be carried out in this context.

The Yaoundé Nsimalen International Airport Perimeter road is 16 km long with (7 meters of roadway), has an execution deadline of 16 months, a project worth of 4.2 billion and is executed by the company BUNS SARL.

The contracting Authority, in which case the CCAA, will enforce prohibited access areas for local residents, while proposing measures that can facilitate their daily lives.

The aim of the report restitution workshop was, therefore, to raise awareness among local residents and to present the content of the results of the impact studies conducted.

With the construction of this perimeter road, communities around the airport area will be serviced by this lane and consequently, the intrusions into the airport domain (runway crossings, farming, livestock activities) will be eliminated. In this regard, the Director General of the CCAA invited the residents, during the report restitution workshop of the environmental and social impact and its management plan, to no longer “use the airport area as a shortcut to the city, schools, Places of Worship, markets etc. given it sacred nature”.
As a mitigation measure, the construction of this perimeter road will contribute to improving the safety of the airport domain, setting the stage for sustainable local development.

These actions and measures to support the population were presented to the residents during this workshop. The contracting company- BUNS SARL also promised to recruit the local workforce. In addition, the First Deputy Senior Divisional Officer of Mefou and Afamba strongly urged the residents to honest collaboration. She also welcomed this CCAA initiative which constitutes the implementation phase of the TSDP-Areal Part.

The CCAA, it should be recalled, received an Environmental Compliance certificate in 2018 for conforming with environmental and social impact regulations related to this project.
