The second meeting of the Committee to fight against the presence of birds and animals at airports and their surroundings took place May 7th, 2019, under the chairmanship of the Minister of Transport.

This meeting aimed in particular at reviewing the evolution of the bird and wildlife risks in Cameroon, since the closeness of birds and animals  to aerodromes can cause collisions with planes, which on the rebound could cause damage on infrastructures or equipments.
During the work session, the Committee noted the elaboration of terms of  reference of the national program of bird and wildlife prevention, and the improvement of the system of notification of safety events connected bird and wild life which
has enabled an increase in the number of events reported to the Cameroon Civil Aviation Authority.

Also, progress has been made in the operation of aerodrome committees for the prevention of bird and wildlife risks, the development of wildlife and ecological studies on international airports in Douala, Yaoundé and Garoua, the intensification of environmental measures aimed at cleaning up the airport’s neighbourhood, and the awareness of all stakeholders, including neighbouring populations, on the risk of birds and wildlife.
The committee also noted from the presentation of Madam the Director General of the CCAA that, the first quarter of the year 2019 recorded 13 impacts for 10,000 movements, against 7 for the year 2018 on this issue. These two figures on bird and wildlife prevention are higher than the international average of 5 impacts per 10,000 movements.
The issue of bird and wildlife risk remains topical, in a context of continuous improvement of safety at our airports.

The Minister of Transport, also Chairman of this Committee invited the participants to continue to implement  the actions listed in the roadmap. A greater guarantee than in the past for the safety and security of our international airports to favour the achievement of the requirements for the much-desired certification of our airports.
