As part of its sovereign mandate to provide air navigation services at the country’s secondary airports, the Cameroon Civil Aviation Authority (CCAA) formally received, on June 30 and July 3, 2026, the installation of new state‑of‑the‑art equipment for the control towers and technical blocks of Maroua‑Salak and Ngaoundéré airports.

This strategic investment, valued at 152.4 million CFA francs, strengthens operational efficiency and reinforces sovereignty over northern airspace, in line with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards, particularly Annex 10 (Aeronautical Telecommunications) and Annex 14 (Aerodrome Design and Operations).

Under the leadership of the Director General of the CCAA, Ms. Paule Avomo Assoumou Koki, a specialised mission carried out the technical acceptance, which also served as the final commissioning of the equipment. This confirmed their reliability after one year of operation under warranty. The team, led by the Director of Financial and Material Resources (DRFM), Mr. Hervé Goma, and Market Engineer Mr. Gilbert Kamto Wambo, validated the systems through check‑lists and real‑condition testing.

It should be noted that the inspections covered critical structural elements, including the installation of new pylons, the placement of antennas on the tower roof, and the installation of a new technical floor to facilitate maintenance. The modernisation works also included a comprehensive refurbishment of the working environment, namely ceilings, painting, carpentry, air conditioning, and variable lighting specific to control towers.

The control towers of Maroua‑Salak and Ngaoundéré are now equipped with cutting‑edge technological infrastructure, comprising next‑generation VHF/HF radios, a digital recording system with GPS time synchronisation, enhanced electrical safety, reinforced security, and improved working comfort.

To ensure the sustainability of these assets and the autonomy of personnel, the CCAA has prioritised capacity‑building through training of maintenance technicians, as well as instruction for controllers and AIM staff in the use of the new tools.

This deployment forms part of a broader campaign of progressive airport rehabilitation promoted by the CCAA’s top management.

Similar works have already been completed in Bafoussam and Bertoua. At the same time, additional projects are underway in Bamenda and on the perimeter fencing of Garoua Airport, with the objective of consolidating, in a sustainable manner, the safety and attractiveness of Cameroon’s airspace.
