Ecological Transition: Key milestones reached for sustainable aviation fuel production in Cameroon
The conference hall of the Cameroon Civil Aviation Authority (CCAA) in Yaoundé hosted, on Thursday, 6 August 2026, a meeting of the working group tasked with monitoring and implementing the national action plan for reducing CO₂ emissions in civil aviation.

The main objective was to review progress on the feasibility study for the production and deployment of Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) in Cameroon, as well as preparations for the upcoming national launch workshop scheduled for 31 August–1 September.
The session was chaired by Mr. Akum Ritzetelar, Head of the Air Transport Division (DTA), representing Director General Mme Paule Avomo Assoumou Koki. It brought together key actors from the energy and industrial sectors, including SONARA, SNH, and several ministries: MINT, MINEFI, MINEE, MINEPDED, MINDDEVEL, MINEPAT, MINDCAF, MINCOMMERCE, along with ADC.
Experts focused on agricultural raw materials and land availability. With arable land estimated at only 10% nationwide, the CCAA strategy prioritises, in the short term, the use of agricultural waste from major producers such as Sodecoton, Sosucam, and CDC. Municipal waste, more complex and costly to process, is considered for later phases.
To support transformation infrastructure, discussions are ongoing with stakeholders on suitable land for the project. In parallel, the WESAF project plans to develop a 300-hectare pilot site in Manyu Division for biofuel production, with direct involvement of local farmers.
This green aviation initiative benefits from strong scientific and international support. Research data from the Universities of Maroua and Dschang are being analysed by the CCAA, under the technical guidance of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the European Union. Ahead of the launch workshop, stakeholders have been urged to intensify information-sharing to build a robust database and ensure the successful take-off of this pioneering project in Cameroon’s skies.
